Piano Lessons
Lesson Options
Private Lessons: 30 or 45 min
Buddy Lessons: 60 min
‘Buddy lesson’ means that a student has a private lesson followed by overlapping or “buddy” time with a peer. Students learn thoroughly through this balance of focusing on pieces during their private lesson time, and musicianship and creative skills during buddy time.
Buddy time activities include:
- ear-training/aural skills
- chord skills
- technique building
- composition
- music literacy games
- improvisation
The collaborative learning time provides extra motivation and friendly competition. Buddy lesson students develop stronger rhythm skills, learn broader, transferable musicianship skills, and have the time to work on creative projects throughout the year.

Students practice challenging concepts and skills through games, so they have the space to think before putting it all together at the piano. All of the activities are geared towards the musical goal of being able to make exciting sounds at the piano.
What makes the lessons unique?
In traditional ‘turn-page’ piano lessons, students are placed in a method book series and lessons follow a predictable format of turning the page to see what’s next. As students advance, there can be big jumps in skills and concepts between units. Through a game based learning approach, students are introduced to concepts and techniques before they encounter them in their pieces. This results in a much more encouraging experience for students.
The studio also specializes in a well-rounded approach that incorporates building a tangible skill set: including playing by ear, improvising, playing the blues, etc. One of the goals of lessons is for students to be able to play music socially in a variety of settings, and not ‘just’ perform pieces they’ve learned.
The smaller studio size allows for more creativity and energy put into the planning and development of each student. Additionally, recitals are cozy events where each student gets to perform more than one piece.
Over the last six years, a plethora of activities and games were developed and adapted for online learning so online piano lessons can be just as fun and effective as in-person lessons.
